A theoretical J22-C...

If the J22 had been equipped with the same engine as the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat it would have had a lot better altitude performance.

The F4F-4 Wildcat used a P&W R-1830-86, rated at 1200Hp for take off. It was equipped with a 2 stage, 2 speed compressor which boosted the available horsepower at altitude. (Ref. 3)

If this engine would have been installed in the J22, it would have had this performance:

The top speed would increase from 357mph to 390mph. It would now had been able to take on the "big guys" at altitudes around 20-25,000ft.
